Within his paintings he tries to
develop exciting textures and light, combining these qualities into original semi-abstract
images of landscapes, seascapes, street scenes, still life and figurative compositions.
"What attracts me most is the pattern of buildings, boats and similar features in a scene.
I build a painting by putting in blocks of colour to develop a pattern which is pleasing to my eye
in colours which are harmonious, bringing in feelings of spontaneity, freshness and freedom"

Amanda Hoskin | Artist of the Day Amanda Hoskin | Nominated byredkite | Nominated On 10.10.07 | Reason I would like to nominate Cornish artist Amanda Hoskin, as she is an artist whose work I greatly admire, so much so, that I bought one of her paintings, [the first painting shown below, of St. Warna's Cove], She really captures the beauty of the Isles of Scilly, and West Cornwall. |

| Amanda Hoskin
Amanda was born and grew up in Cornwall. She was educated at Tremough Convent, then attended Falmouth and Chelsea Colleges of Art and Cornwall College. After finishing art school she became a freelance wildlife illustrator. However working and living in London, she began to miss Cornwall and so in the early 90's moved back and became a sailing instructor in the summer months and travelled around in winter. | |

During this time she continued to paint, changing the medium from watercolour to oils, her style became much freer and she began to concentrate on skies and landscapes, which constantly change - this gave her a great deal of inspiration and was far more challenging. Towards the end of the 90s, Amanda decided to paint full time and has exhibited her work regularly in Cornwall, Bristol and London. She is now also producing limited edition silkscreen and giclee prints.

Andrea Saltzman
Born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Andrea Saltzman began her studies as a child at The Cleveland Institute of Art. She went on to graduate from The University of Arizona and studied further at both the San Francisco Academy of Art and The Art Students' League of New York.
It was in New York City where Andrea was accepted into the world- renowned realist painter Frank Mason's master class. Andrea studied with Frank Mason for over fourteen years, a dedication that is reflected in the nature of her work.
Building upon the realist technique, Andrea's work is often inclined towards a portraiture that reflects the nature of the subject by incorporating the very background of the piece into the overall emotional field. To achieve this, Andrea favors the manipulation of light versus shadow and creating depth with layers of transparent paint application.
All of this has garnered Andrea with exhibitions ranging from The Metropolitan Museum of Art to the Portrait Group Gallery in Washington DC. In addition, Andrea's artistry has graced such magazines as Vogue, Italian Vogue, and WWD.
She currently is a member of The National Arts Club of New York City, The Portrait Society of America, and The Art Students' League of New York City.

Kurt Jackson
Kurt Jackson is one of Britain's leading painters. Born in 1961 his work embraces an extensive range of materials and techniques including mixed media, large canvases, relief work, print making and sculpture.
Whether working in Cornwall, up country or abroad,Jackson's paintings are set in places that have been travelled to and explored regularly through out his life and seen through the eyes of an artist with a deep and rich understanding of natural history and ecology, politics and environmental issues; maybe recording a time and place and a way of life - a geography where past and present co exist.

" A dedication to and celebration of the environment is intrinsic to both his politics and his art and a holistic involvement with his subjects provides the springboard for formal innovations" Edward Krcma 2001.
Kurt Jackson states; "In Cornwall my subjects are mostly places I know well, that I visit over and over again - certain areas of coast, moorland and valleys.
I tend to work on projects, usually over a year, which are based on a particular aspect of Cornish culture or a distinct tract of countryside.
Capturing a fleeting impression doesn't interest me. In all my paintings the aim is to convey my feelings and sense of awareness in that particular environment".
| Artist of the Day Kurt Jackson | Nominated byJedi | Nominated On 7.8.07 | Reason I would like to nominate Kurt Jackson as my Artist of the Day as he is a big influence on my work |
Jackson's paintings are fluent, dynamic and exciting, resulting from a working method that is both challenging and intense.
Kurt Jackson has probably had the biggest influence on me as an artist bar none,to see his paintings especially his larger works is just breathtaking.

If you are in Truro,Cornwall during September then go to his next exhibition at The Lemon Street Gallery, you won't be disappointed. More info at www.kurtjackson.co.uk Jedi

Lucy Braham
by CHARLOTTE GILL
Last updated at 10:11am on 13th July 2007
The father of a fashion designer hacked to death by her drug-crazed neighbour has condemned Oxford University and Harrow School for failing to tackle his addiction.
Old Harrovian William Jaggs, 23, stripped and then stabbed 25-year-old Lucy Braham 66 times at her home after she rejected his gift of a kitten.
The two were the children of masters at the public school and had known each other for over 20 years.
An Old Bailey judge accepted Jaggs's plea of guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and ordered he be detained indefinitely at Broadmoor maximum security hospital.
After the verdict, Lucy's father, who is art director at Harrow, accused senior masters of failing to deal with Jaggs's behaviour.
Lucy had been carving out a successful career for herself.
She had attended Chelsea School of Art where she completed a foundation course before getting a coveted place at the London College of Fashion.
At the time of her death, she was working from a studio in the family home, busily designing a range of clothing accessories with a friend and was about to launch an online fashion label.
