Born in Twickenham, Stan started school in Belview Road, Battersea. He was evacuated to Holsworthy in Cornwall during the War. When he left school, he went to work on a farm for a year before returning to London.
He worked in a refrigeration factory to start with before joining the Royal Air Force. It was here that he had his first introduction to art whilst listening,in a radio shack, for returning aircraft during the 1940's. To relieve the boredom he doodled on message forms and found that he had the means of making a reasonable representation of objects in the room.
He came out of the Air Force as a Radio mechanic and joined Cable& Wireless International where he stayed for 35 years.
Over the years he has developed a liking for drawing in pencil, and his talents served him well as an instructor when he was required to use the old fashion blackboard.
He has now been retired for some 23 years and uses watercolour and pastels, but in the last few years has taken to painting buildings and landscapes in oils using painting knives. He regularly demonstrates his technique to art groups and finds, when painting outdoors, his method attracts a lot of interest. Stan claims it is very easy to do and delights in showing how it works.
Stan has also had some success with what he calls (PPP) pets in pastel form photographs.
He has worked tirelessly for the Club since 1997 and has been recipient of the coveted Rowney Palette in the past.
Allotment gardening, organ playing and DIY make up his other interest. It is generally accepted that he also makes a fair cup of tea. He is currently the Membership Secretary for the really social Art Club.
