A Molesey girl, Barbara could always be found drawing as a child.
But denied the chance of going to Art School, and desperate to draw she turned down the opportunity of taking “A” levels and going to University in favour of Cartography, however this did nothing to stimulate her creativity.
In her 20’s she did Oil painting at evening school for a year or so. She then entered and passed “A” level Art, after 3 months spent madly practising the necessary skills, this was followed by 3 years at teacher training college where she had the opportunity to experience several different artistic pursuits.
As a teacher with a young family, and later horses , the opportunities to pursue her love of Art were few and far between, so other than a short spell at life drawing she had to satisfy her needs in the infants classroom sketching whenever she found a spare moment.
After breeding a foal, she had a go at drawing his portrait which led to requests from friends to have portraits of their animals done, Barbara had now started to experiment with pastels and may well have continued had it not been for retirement and a programme called “Watercolour Challenge”.
Suddenly the urge to create paintings with colour and expression became all consuming.
Adult education provided an insight into watercolour, and she joined local art societies and began to paint with a will.
Barbara enjoys most of all painting animals and children, particularly beach scenes.
She has exhibited successfully at the Llewellyn Alexander Gallery with the Society of Feline Artists, and also belongs to the Society of Equestrian Artists.
Her work can be seen at various Art club exhibitions where she has won several awards including 1st prize for a portrait of the Queen in Jubilee Year.
